Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum ETH -0.60%

Ethereum’s co-creator, Vitalik Buterin, recently unveiled a detailed roadmap for the blockchain’s development in 2024, emphasizing the platform’s strategic objectives for the near future.

Key focuses of the roadmap include:

  • The Merge: Transitioning to a more robust proof-of-stake consensus.
  • The Surge: Aiming to boost transaction capacity to 100,000 per second across Ethereum and its Layer 2 networks.
  • The Scourge: Addressing challenges related to MEV and liquid pooling.
  • The Verge: Streamlining block verification processes.
  • The Purge: Simplifying the Ethereum protocol.
  • The Splurge: Additional miscellaneous developments.

Vitalik Buterin, in his recent social media discussion, highlighted single-slot finality (SSF) as a crucial solution to several of Ethereum’s current proof of stake design issues. He also commended the advancements in Layer 2 networks and Verkle tree implementations.

A significant aspect of the Scourge’s focus is the combat against economic centralization in Ethereum, particularly in two areas: MEV and liquid stake pooling. Concerns have been raised about the growing dominance of Ethereum staking service Lido, especially since Ethereum’s shift to a proof-of-stake consensus.

While there have been some minor updates, the primary objectives for Ethereum remain consistent with the previous year’s plan. Vitalik refrained from predicting a specific timeline for these developments but indicated that they are arranged in order of their priority.
