Meta and IBM have inaugurated an alliance encompassing over fifty entities in the realm of artificial intelligence, including companies and academic circles. This consortium is advocating for an “open model” in AI, aiming to make significant inroads in a rapidly expanding sector.
This conglomerate, known as the AI Alliance, boasts participants such as Intel, Oracle, Cornell University, and the National Science Foundation. Its primary objective is to amalgamate resources in support of “open innovation and open science” within the field of AI.
The Alliance’s proponents are staunch advocates of open source—a paradigm where technology is disseminated without charge, rooted in a tradition of cooperation between major technology firms, scholars, and a zealous community of independent coders.
In contrast to entities like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cohere, which have been at the forefront of developing advanced AI models as closed or proprietary systems—overseen by their originators and accessible for a fee—the Meta and IBM AI Alliance champions a more collaborative and accessible approach.
